HEAVENLY BRAZIL
This is all I can say… An amazing experience.
From the first moment in Brazil, in Fortaleza and Sobral, everything was new, different, shocking… but at the same time felt like at home, mostly because its warm, welcoming, incredible people.
On the academic side, this clerkship gives you the chance of getting to know and understand a different health system, how it works, how it is organised, its lacks and its merits and, the best of it, from first hand. It also grants you the opportunity of staying in the hospital and completing the theory you might have learnt at your own university with practice, either attending to operations, staying at the emergency room, attending to consults with patients or just talking to medical students and doctors who, at my surprise, are always very eager to help with anything they can. Therefore, I can say it has been really encouraging and interesting, mainly because I have seen the reality of something I have only studied theoretically.
On the other side, I found the best of all I could never have expected: amazing people, memories, parties, trips, adventures, discoveries… From the first day, the other incomings and I were treated as part of their group by the students, who did everything in their power to make our stay good, but not only good, they wanted us to believe it unforgettable, as it proved to be. We were invited to their houses, parties, they tried to teach us how to dance Forró, in which I have to say I did not succeed, we went to amazing beaches, lagoas, we drunk and drunk agua de coco…
In short, they showed us the Brazilian way of life, the sweet Brazilian way of life!! But I would like to think that we gave them something as well, some European spirit, Italian, Dutch, Czech, Spanish… And I hope a lifetime friendship!!
